Free card defenders to highlight fraud prevention

Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID) is working with its Healthy High Street partners and independent stores to distribute 10,000 credit card defender sleeves to customers to highlight fraud prevention.

The special sleeves for contactless credit and debit cards contain Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) blocking technology to help protect against card details being read.

They are being distributed over the next few weeks to customers at Marks and Spencer and Wilko as well as independent stores, bars and restaurants including Cubana Tapas Bar, Theatre Delicatessen, Virgin Money and vintage clothing retailer A New Shop.

Diane Jarvis, BID Manager, said: “While there is no indication of a problem with this type of crime in Sheffield, the free credit card defenders are a great opportunity to highlight the importance of fraud prevention, the protection already available and the simple steps people can take to protect themselves.”

Shoppers are encouraged to place their contactless debit or credit card into one of the sleeves to help prevent fraudsters from using a simple mobile device to lift personal details from a card.

Other advice to stay safe from fraud includes carefully monitoring bank statements and immediately reporting any unknown transactions to your bank.
