Charles Street mural brings new colour to city centre

A striking new street mural by Sheffield‑based artist Mikey, known as RUOK, has transformed the side of the Red Lion pub on Charles Street, delivering a bold visual lift in one of the city centre’s busiest student areas.

Commissioned by Sheffield BID, the large‑scale artwork replaces a previously tired and graffiti‑covered wall with a vibrant abstract design that brings colour, texture and energy to a key route through the city centre.

The location sits at the heart of a densely populated student neighbourhood, surrounded by accommodation, independent businesses and well‑used walking routes linking the city centre to Sheffield’s university campuses.

The project forms part of Sheffield BID’s wider programme to enhance the look and feel of the city centre while supporting emerging and early‑career artists.

By commissioning original public artworks in prominent locations, the BID continues to invest in creative talent while delivering visible improvements to streets and buildings used by thousands of people every day.

RUOK is a Sheffield‑based artist whose work is increasingly recognised for its layered compositions and distinctive use of colour.

The Charles Street mural represents a significant city‑centre commission and adds to the area’s evolving mix of culture, hospitality and independent activity. The mural provides a strong visual backdrop to the Red Lion pub, refreshing the building’s appearance and contributing positively to the character of the street.

As with other Sheffield BID‑supported schemes, it demonstrates how creative interventions can tackle underused or neglected spaces, improve perceptions of safety and care, and celebrate Sheffield’s identity as a creative city.

Sheffield BID continues to work with artists, property owners and local partners to identify new opportunities for public art projects that support economic vitality, encourage footfall and create a more welcoming city centre environment for businesses, residents, students and visitors alike.
