New street mural improves key gateway into Sheffield city centre

A striking new street mural has been unveiled at Rockingham Gate, marking the first site to benefit from Sheffield BID’s visitor welcome programme in the opening year of its new term.

Commissioned by Sheffield BID and created by acclaimed street artist Enzo, the artwork transforms a previously redundant and heavily tagged space into a vibrant visual gateway into the city centre.

Rockingham Gate was selected following feedback from businesses and partners who identified the location as detracting from first impressions for investors and visitors attending meetings and nearby venues.

As a prominent route into the city centre, the site plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions of Sheffield. The new mural introduces colour, pattern and identity to an underused frontage, helping to improve the experience for those entering the city while reinforcing Sheffield’s reputation for creativity and independent culture.

The commission forms part of Sheffield BID’s wider commitment to improving welcome, cleanliness and vibrancy across the city centre, with targeted interventions focusing on gateways, arrival points and neglected spaces.

By working with established artists and responding directly to business feedback, the BID aims to deliver highly visible improvements that support confidence, footfall and investment.

Before-and-after images show a dramatic change: from shuttered, graffiti-covered units to a cohesive piece of public art that brings energy and cohesion to the street.

The mural also complements existing businesses along the route and enhances the wider public realm.

Rockingham Gate is the first of a number of locations identified for improvement as Sheffield BID continues to roll out its visitor welcome programme over the coming year.
